Feel like giving up on your business?
Author: admin // Category: UncategorizedI was on a conference call last evening, listening to frustrated members of my primary business vent their feelings of failure and disappointment that things were not going the way they had hoped. I was thinking about a little book I read a little while ago, and I would like to recommend it to all those defeated, frustrated people out there that want to quit when the going gets rough. It is called “The Dip” and it was written by a guy named Seth Godin who just writes these little gems about business that really stick with you.
The Dip is that place you come to in your business where things are slow, or not going quite the way you had planned. Godin says it is the long slog between starting and mastery, the difference between the beginning technique and the expert approach, the long stretch between beginner’s luck and real accomplishment.
My mama always told me that anything worth doing was going to be hard work. So why, when the work starts getting hard, do we want to give up? It is the dip, because the dip seems long and it seems to stretch to infinity.
I believe this is where the idea of the 3% leaders comes in. There’s only 3% left in the game because the other 97% hit the dip and decided to quit. “The Dip is the secret to your success. The people who set out to make it through the Dip- the people who invest the time and the energy and the effort to power through the Dip- those are the ones who become the best in the world.”
If I could have told those people on the call anything tonight, I would have told them not to give up. Press through the dip, for there is hope on the other side, but it takes hard work to get there. I have been where they are, but I have learned that this is what makes or breaks leaders in business. There are those who will lean into it and master their game, and there are those who will go home with their tail between their legs. I, for one, am working for mastery, because I believe anyone who presses through can be successful.
